Fun Facts About Blue Spirulina ▼
- Blue spirulina is extracted from Arthrospira platensis, a blue-green microalgae that has been on Earth for over 3.5 billion years — making it one of the oldest life forms on the planet.
- The Aztecs harvested spirulina from Lake Texcoco in the 16th century and pressed it into cakes called Tecuitlatl — one of the earliest recorded uses of algae as food.
- NASA has studied spirulina as a potential food source for long-duration space missions.
- Blue spirulina gets its stunning aqua color from phycocyanin, a pigment unique to blue-green algae.
- Unlike green spirulina, blue spirulina has a neutral flavor, making it perfect for adding color to smoothies, desserts, and baked goods without altering taste.
Please be advised that there may be variations in the color and photo of the powder between batches and harvests. We want to ensure that our customers are aware of this potential variance so that they can make informed decisions when purchasing our products. We kindly request your understanding and patience as we strive to maintain consistent quality standards and ensure customer satisfaction.

Very beautiful color when applied to sourdough
If you want blue in your sourdough, use blue spirulina. I love the blue butterfly pea flower but I think the acidity in the sourdough makes it purple. Blue spirulina is perfect! The picture shows my sourdough with blue spirulina and pink pitaya!
I use your powdered colors for my baked treats at GroovyBones. All my customers are happy with them. We never use anything artificial. They help me to create really nice groovy designs.
Makes a really pretty and vibrant blue color
